When a RIDER goes down; Usually the best thing to do is NOTHING!
PROTECT YOURSELF from injury - jumping out on the track to "rescue" a downed rider is VERY dangerous - the Medics do not need 2 (or more!) additional victims. DO NOT EVER ALLOW CHILDREN TO COME OUT ONTO THE TRACK!
PROTECT the rider from other riders - from the SIDE of the track, wave your arms to warn on-coming riders - DO NOT try to get in front of them.
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER try to remove their helmet. You can cause permanent SPINAL CORD INJURY. The MEDICS are trained in the proper technique of helmet removal. Let us do what we are here to do.
DO NOT MOVE OR ROLL OVER AN UNCONSCIOUS OR BADLY INJURED RIDER - Moving them the wrong way can greatly worsen their injuries or even kill them.
The First Aid Staff at Burleson Motocross Park has years of experience treating Motocross injuries. Allow us to do what we are trained for. Parents always have the right to decide what care their minor children receive. The Medics will always respect that. But please put the health and safety of your loved one FIRST. In the cases of a bad injury; let us evaluate them first. Many times a very serious injury may be hidden -- internal injuries & bleeding, broken bones that are not obvious, concussions and other possible damages that may not be readily visible. This is a great sport and a wonderful past time - it is not worth the consequences of racing with a serious hidden injury.
We are here to CARE for the health and safety of EVERYONE at Burleson Motocross Park. Chester has granted me this privilege for about 18 years and it has been an honor to care for you racers and everyone else at Burleson Motocross.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. And, REMEMBER:
The next time you see a rider crash - DO NOT GO RUNNING TO RESCUE THEM - LET ME DO IT! IT'S WHAT I'M PAID TO DO!
Best regards, David - the Track Medic
